Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod): Everything You Need to Know

Learn about the Ghana Gold Board, its role in Ghana’s gold industry, gold trading regulations, licensing requirements, buying and exporting gold, and the rules governing gold transactions.

The Ghana Gold Board, known as GoldBod, is the Ghanaian government body holding exclusive legal authority over buying, selling, assaying, and exporting gold in Ghana — and it has genuinely transformed the country’s gold sector since its establishment.

In 2025 alone, gold export earnings under GoldBod’s oversight reached approximately $20 billion, nearly double the previous year’s total, helping drive Ghana’s strongest export performance on record.

This guide covers exactly what GoldBod is, how it actually works, the real economic impact it’s had, and what it means if you’re buying, selling, or exporting gold connected to Ghana.

What Is the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod)?

GoldBod is Ghana’s centralized state authority for the gold trade, established under the GoldBod Act, 1140 in 2025 with exclusive legal power to buy, sell, weigh, grade, assay, value, and export gold and other precious minerals across the entire country.

Before GoldBod’s creation, Ghana’s gold trade operated through a more fragmented system involving the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), the Minerals Commission, and a wide range of private dealers with varying levels of oversight.

GoldBod consolidated this into a single regulatory and commercial authority, fundamentally changing how gold moves from Ghanaian mines to international markets.

Why Was GoldBod Created?

GoldBod was created specifically to reduce gold smuggling, improve traceability across the entire supply chain from mine to export, and strengthen Ghana’s foreign exchange position through more centralized, better-documented gold revenue.

The results have been genuinely dramatic: Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector — historically the segment most associated with informal, undocumented gold flows — produced a record 104 metric tonnes in 2025, actually overtaking large-scale industrial mining output for the first time in the country’s history, with GoldBod generating close to $11 billion in foreign exchange from that ASM sector alone.

How Much Has GoldBod Actually Generated for Ghana?

Ghana closed 2025 with record total export earnings of $31.1 billion, according to Bank of Ghana data — a sharp jump from $19.1 billion in 2024. Gold specifically drove this surge, with gold export earnings reaching approximately $20 billion in 2025, nearly double the $10.3 billion recorded the year before, and accounting for roughly 42% of Ghana’s total merchandise exports in early 2026.

The impact reached well beyond trade figures: Ghana’s gross international reserves climbed to a record $13.8 billion by the end of 2025, up from $8.98 billion at the close of 2024, and Ghana’s Deputy Finance Minister told Parliament that GoldBod’s gold exports were the single largest driver of the cedi’s remarkable 41% appreciation against the US dollar that same year.

What Does GoldBod Require From Gold Exporters?

Every gold export from Ghana must now pass through GoldBod’s licensing and documentation framework, and a genuinely significant recent requirement is worth understanding clearly: gold from artisanal and small-scale mining must now be refined inside Ghana before export, with GoldBod stating that non-compliance can bring license suspension or outright revocation.

This is a real, substantive shift in policy, directly tied to Ghana’s broader push to capture more refining value domestically rather than exporting raw or semi-refined material.

It’s worth being precise here rather than overstate Ghana’s current refining capacity: Ghana currently has four licensed gold refineries, but GoldBod has announced supply contracts with only two of them, and — this matters for anyone evaluating Ghana-origin gold specifically — no Ghanaian refinery currently holds accreditation on the LBMA Good Delivery List, the global benchmark for institutional-grade bullion.

Ghanaian-refined gold can still be genuinely investment-grade and properly certified, but it doesn’t yet carry that specific top-tier international accreditation the way, for instance, South Africa’s Rand Refinery does.

Does GoldBod Set Gold Prices in Ghana?

Yes, and this is a genuinely recent development worth knowing about specifically: GoldBod introduced a new official pricing regime effective July 1, 2026, designed to tighten pricing standards further and reduce the financial incentive for gold to move through informal, off-channel sales rather than through GoldBod’s own regulated system.

This follows the same underlying logic as the rest of GoldBod’s mandate — the tighter and more consistently GoldBod’s official price tracks genuine market value, the less reason miners and traders have to sell outside the formal system.

What Is Ghana’s Gold-Backed Reserve Accumulation Policy?

GoldBod now operates under the Ghana Accelerated National Reserve Accumulation Policy, which took formal effect on August 3, 2026, following Cabinet and Parliamentary approval.

This policy establishes a structured, collaborative financing model specifically for the artisanal and small-scale mining sector, developed through consultation with the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Ghana, and commercial banks.

In its first full month under this new model, GoldBod reported $1.315 billion in foreign exchange earnings for August 2026 alone — $668.21 million channeled into the banking sector through spot sales and funded forward arrangements, and $646.59 million directed to central bank reserves. GoldBod’s own September 2026 target sits at $1.4 billion, split evenly between commercial banks and the Bank of Ghana.

What Does GoldBod Mean for International Gold Buyers?

For any international buyer or exporter, GoldBod licensing verification isn’t an optional due-diligence step — it’s the actual legal foundation of operating anywhere in Ghana’s gold sector today.

A dealer who can’t produce current GoldBod credentials isn’t simply less convenient to work with; they may be operating outside the current legal framework entirely, exposing both themselves and any buyer working with them to real regulatory risk.

Given the July 2026 pricing regime and the domestic refining requirement now in force, working with a properly GoldBod-compliant source matters more today than it did even a year ago.
