Gold Exporters in Africa: Complete List 2026

Gold exporters in Africa are licensed companies and state bodies that buy gold from mines and artisanal miners and sell it legally abroad. They sell it as 24K gold bars, gold nuggets or gold dust and doré. Ghana, South Africa, Mali, Burkina Faso and Sudan mine the most gold. Uganda has become one of the continent’s biggest gold exporters by value because of its refineries. A genuine exporter should always show you a valid export licence, a certificate of origin and an independent assay report before you pay.

This guide explains how African gold exports work, which countries lead and what documents you need. It also covers how prices are set and how to spot a fake dealer. It is written by Buy Gold Bars Africa Ltd, a licensed gold exporter based in Kampala, Uganda, since 2020.

What Is a Gold Exporter in Africa?

A gold exporter is a company or state agency licensed by a mining ministry to buy, process and ship gold out of the country. In Uganda that licence is a Mineral Dealer’s Licence. In Ghana, artisanal gold is now bought and exported through the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and its licensed agents.

Most African gold moves from mine to buyer in five steps:

  1. Large industrial mines and small-scale artisanal miners dig out ore, nuggets and alluvial dust.
  2. Buying and aggregation.Licensed dealers buy raw gold nuggets and bullion and gold dust from miners and traders.
  3. Refining and assay.Refineries melt and purify the gold, often to 99.5% to 99.99% fine. An independent lab then confirms its purity and weight.
  4. Export clearance. The exporter pays royalties and export levies, then gets the export permit and customs clearance.
  5. Insured shipping. The gold is flown under secure, insured transport to the buyer, usually in Dubai, Switzerland, Europe, Asia or the USA.

Buyers can buy at different points in this chain. Raw dust and nuggets cost less, but you carry more refining and purity risk. Refined gold ingots and 1 oz gold bars cost a little more but are easier to verify and resell.

Top Gold Exporting Countries in Africa

Ghana is Africa’s largest gold producer, while South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda earn some of the highest gold export revenues. The table shows the most recent published figures.

Country Latest figure What buyers should know
Ghana 4.8 million oz mined in 2024, a record; over US$5 billion exported in H1 2025 Africa’s top producer. Artisanal gold is exported through GoldBod and licensed agents.
South Africa About US$8.17 billion in gold exports, 2024–25 Mature, highly regulated market. Needs SARS clearance and an export permit. See where to buy gold in South Africa.
Uganda About US$5.8 billion exported in 2025, up 76% on 2024 Gold is Uganda’s top export. Much of it is refined gold sourced from the region. See gold bars for sale in Kampala.
Tanzania About US$4.32 billion in the year to August 2025 Large industrial mines plus a licensed dealer system. See buy gold in Tanzania.
Burkina Faso About 60.8 tonnes mined in 2024 Most output is exported; security risks in mining areas.
Mali Among Africa’s top three producers Trade is controlled by the Ministry of Mines; royalties apply.

Other notable sources include Sudan, Zimbabwe, the DRC, Kenya, Zambia and Mozambique. Gold from eastern DRC needs extra due diligence because of conflict-mineral risks. For a wider country guide, read where to buy gold in Africa and gold deposits in Ghana.

Documents a Legal Gold Exporter Must Provide

A legal African gold export always comes with a paper trail, and missing paperwork is the most common reason shipments are held at customs. Ask for these before you pay:

Document What it proves Who issues it
Export or mineral dealer’s licence The seller is allowed to trade and export gold Mining ministry (in Uganda, the Directorate of Geological Survey and Mines)
Certificate of origin Where the gold was mined; supports conflict-free status Mining authority or chamber of commerce
Assay report Purity and weight, matched to the bar’s serial number Accredited independent laboratory
Export permit and royalty receipt Taxes and levies have been paid Mining ministry and revenue authority
Commercial invoice and packing list Value, quantity and purity for customs Exporter
Customs declaration Legal exit and entry of the goods Customs in both countries
Airway bill Chain of custody during shipping Insured carrier

Taxes differ by country. In Uganda, refined gold exports carry an export levy, while unrefined gold exports are effectively restricted. Our gold export tax in Uganda guide explains the current rates, and the South Africa gold export licence guide covers South Africa. For the full checklist, read legal requirements to buy gold from Africa.

Buyers also have duties at home. Commercial importers usually need a trading or import licence, and every shipment must be declared to customs on arrival.

How to Buy Gold from an African Exporter, Step by Step

The safe way to buy is to verify the exporter first, test the gold before final payment and ship only with insured logistics.

  1. Choose and verify the exporter.Check its licence number directly with the issuing ministry before you discuss price.
  2. Complete KYC.Expect to share your ID, company registration and proof of funds. A real exporter will also ask for these.
  3. Agree the product and price.Confirm the form (bars, nuggets or dust), purity, weight and the discount or premium to the London spot price.
  4. Sign a sales and purchase agreement. It should set out quantity, purity, price formula, delivery terms and who pays insurance.
  5. Test the gold.Use an independent assay, ideally a fire assay, before the final payment is released.
  6. Pay through traceable channels.Use a bank transfer to a verified business account or escrow, released after assay and export papers are confirmed.
  7. Ship and declare.Use insured precious-metals logistics and declare the shipment at your destination customs.

Small buyers can start with a single 1 kg 24K gold bar or smaller gold bullion bars. Refiners and institutions can arrange large volume gold deals. Our how to buy gold bars from Africa safely guide covers each step in more detail, and the gold authentication guide explains testing.

Shipping costs depend on weight, value and destination. See what it costs to ship gold to the USA from Africa, or our buyer guides for Dubai, the UK, Switzerland, Germany, China and Singapore.

How African Gold Export Prices Are Set

African gold is priced against the international LBMA gold price, then adjusted for purity, form and volume. No genuine exporter sells far below that benchmark.

  • Benchmark:The LBMA (London) price per troy ounce. One kilogram equals about 32.15 troy ounces.
  • Purity:The price is multiplied by the gold’s fineness. A 999.9 bar is priced at almost full value, while 90% nuggets are priced at 90% of it before refining costs.
  • Form:Raw gold dust and doré sell at a discount because they still need refining. Refined, assayed bars sell close to spot or at a small premium.
  • Volume:Larger orders usually get better terms.
  • Costs:Export levies, assay, insurance and freight are added or deducted depending on the delivery terms in your contract.

A simple way to estimate the value of a bar:

Value = LBMA price per oz × weight in oz × purity ± agreed premium or discount

Gold Export Scams in Africa: Red Flags to Watch For

The clearest sign of a gold scam is a price far below the world spot price. Real exporters cannot sell below the market, because they can sell the same gold to refineries at full value.

Watch out for these common scams:

  • Advance fees. You are asked to pay “insurance”, “customs” or “clearance” fees before any gold is released.
  • Fake bars.Gold-plated tungsten bars can pass a surface test. Only a fire assay or drilled core sample proves the inside.
  • Fake dealers.Polished websites or social media pages with copied certificates and invented reviews.
  • Broker chains.Middlemen take a commission, then vanish, or present papers from sellers who do not exist.
  • Untraceable payments.Requests for cash, crypto, gift cards or money transfer services instead of a bank account in the company’s name.
  • Pressure to rush.“Today only” prices or refusal to allow an independent assay.

How to verify an exporter:

  • Confirm the licence number with the mining ministry, not just from a photo of the certificate
  • Check the company registration and physical office
  • Ask for past assay certificates and call the lab that issued them
  • Insist on an independent assay before final payment
  • Pay only a verified company bank account or escrow
