Where to Buy Gold in Ghana: Licensed Ghana Gold Dealers

Where to Buy Gold in Ghana: You can legally buy gold in Ghana today through three channels: licensed jewellers such as PMMC Jewellery Ltd for retail gold jewellery, Ghanaian commercial banks for the Bank of Ghana’s Ghana Gold Coin (residents only), and the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) directly for bulk or investment-grade gold.

GoldBod is now the sole legal buyer, seller, assayer, and exporter of gold from Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale mining sector, under the Ghana Gold Board Act (Act 1140), and foreigners are banned from trading gold locally in Ghana outside that system.

For international buyers wanting bulk or investment-grade gold, the only legal route runs directly through GoldBod as an approved off-taker, not through a private dealer claiming Ghana-based operations.

This guide explains exactly who can legally sell and buy gold in Ghana today, how that differs from the old system, and what your options are if you’re outside the country.

What Changed: From PMMC to GoldBod

For decades, Ghana’s gold trade ran through the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), which licensed private dealers to buy, assay, and export gold on behalf of miners and traders. The Ghana Gold Board Act replaced that system entirely.

GoldBod absorbed PMMC’s core trading and assay functions and became the sole authority permitted to buy, sell, assay, and export gold from Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector. Every previously issued PMMC or Minerals Commission trading licence for ASM gold was voided, and dealing in gold without a GoldBod licence became a criminal offence.

This wasn’t a minor regulatory tweak. It was a complete restructuring aimed at stopping gold smuggling and keeping more export revenue inside Ghana’s formal financial system.

Can Foreigners Buy Gold in Ghana?

Not through local retail or wholesale trading. Foreign nationals and foreign-owned entities are barred from participating in Ghana’s local gold trade. The legal routes available to a foreign buyer are narrower:

  • Applying directly to GoldBod as an approved off-taker, a formal status involving GoldBod’s own vetting and contracting process, not something a private dealer can grant on your behalf.
  • Buying retail jewellery as an individual, which is a normal consumer purchase, not “trading” in gold, and remains available to anyone, resident or visitor, through licensed jewellers.
  • Buying from a large-scale producer’s own export channel, relevant only to institutional buyers with existing supply agreements, not individual investors.

If anyone tells you otherwise, offering to sell and export bulk Ghanaian gold to you as a foreign individual through a private arrangement, that claim should be verified directly with GoldBod before you send any money.

Where to Legitimately Buy Gold in Ghana

GoldBod is the starting point for anything beyond retail jewellery: bulk gold, investment bars, or ASM-sourced gold of any quantity now has to go through GoldBod’s own licensing and trading system. Verify any claim of GoldBod authorisation directly on goldbod.gov.gh, not from a certificate a dealer emails you.

Licensed jewellers, including PMMC Jewellery Ltd (PJL), the jewellery subsidiary that continued operating after PMMC’s core gold-trading functions were absorbed into GoldBod. PJL produces and sells handmade and machine-made 18K and 22K gold jewellery, including designs based on Ghanaian Adinkra symbols, and remains a legitimate retail option for both residents and visitors.

Ghanaian commercial banks, for the Bank of Ghana’s Ghana Gold Coin (GGC). This is a real, government-issued, 99.99%-pure gold coin available in 1 oz, ½ oz, and ¼ oz sizes. It is sold exclusively to Ghanaian residents, in cedis, through participating commercial banks, not to foreign buyers and not through private dealers.

Large-scale mining companies, including Newmont Ghana Gold, AngloGold Ashanti, and Gold Fields, which retain their own institutional export rights under existing mining agreements, separate from the ASM sector GoldBod now controls. These are not retail channels for individual buyers.

What About Artisanal Gold Dust and Nuggets?

Artisanal and small-scale mining remains a major source of Ghanaian gold, particularly around the Western Region (Tarkwa, Bogoso) and parts of Northern Ghana. But under the current framework, that gold is now meant to flow through licensed aggregators into GoldBod, not sold informally to individual buyers for private export.

Buying unverified gold dust or nuggets directly from informal sources carries real legal risk on top of the usual authenticity risk, since that gold’s chain of custody may not be GoldBod-compliant at all.

Gold Pricing in Ghana

Gold sold through any legitimate channel in Ghana, GoldBod, licensed jewellers, or the Bank of Ghana’s coin programme, is priced off the international spot price (quoted in US dollars per troy ounce) plus a local premium covering refining, certification, and margin.

The GGC specifically is priced daily against the previous day’s LBMA PM auction price, converted to cedis, and published by the Bank of Ghana. Always check a live spot price before evaluating any quote, since gold moves constantly and a price that looked fair yesterday may not be today.

If You’re Outside Ghana and Want African Gold

Since Ghana’s retail and wholesale gold trade is now closed to foreign buyers outside the GoldBod off-taker process, many international buyers instead source certified gold from African countries where conventional export licensing for private dealers remains straightforward. Buy Gold Bars Africa, a licensed Uganda gold dealer, sources certified bars from Uganda, the DR Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa:

This isn’t Ghanaian gold, and no dealer should claim otherwise, but it’s a legitimate way to buy certified African gold without needing GoldBod off-taker status. See our guide to where to buy gold in Africa for a fuller picture of sourcing options across the continent.

How to Verify Any Gold Seller, in Ghana or Elsewhere

  1. Check GoldBod authorisation directly at goldbod.gov.gh for anything beyond retail jewellery in Ghana.
  2. Never accept a PMMC or Minerals Commission export licence as current authority. Those were voided for ASM gold trading; a supplier presenting one as current credentials is presenting invalid documents.
  3. Demand an independent assay certificate matching the specific item’s weight and purity.
  4. Compare the quote against live spot price, and treat anything far below spot as a serious warning sign.
  5. Use traceable payment methods, never cash for a significant purchase, and keep every document.
